I've been taking a much needed break. I've been discovering who I am, what is important to me and where I would like to spend my energy. It takes a lot of emotional and mental energy just to do that but it is so very worth it. In other news, just five more days until the shortest day of the year and then the days will finally start to get longer! However, it will be a little while before the sun's warmth comes back to greet us. Until then, I'm focusing on inspirational and energizing interior lighting. These are a few of my favorites.

It's dangerously close to my last real post. Golden hues. Necklace. Gorgeous. Well, the gorgeous bit is understandable of course. And if I had actually been writing blog entries in the past month then it wouldn't be so noticeable that these two things were so similar. However, it seems that I am too busy for that. Oh, I know. Excuses. But I just found ASOS last week. I excitedly sent Annaliese a gchat saying, check out ASOS, affordable and spectacular. She replied, oh yeah, I love their stuff. And I was like, oh?! How did I not know about this? Needless to say, I am thrilled. Not only could I actually afford this necklace, the fact that it only costs six dollars to ship something from the UK proves my theory about shipping costs being a major scam in this country. Anyhow, I tend to keep my impulse purchases under check but this time I was out of control.

Even with the passing of fashion week in New York City and then in London, I've been hard pressed to find anything that truly inspires me. It must have flown out my window at the end of August and is apparently just making its return at the end of September.

One of the things that drew us to rent our current apartment was the teeny corner office. We absolutely love it. It's just the right size. Small enough to be private but large enough for functionality. At this point, I'm having trouble making it useful for lack of organization. Honestly, that's a problem with the entire apartment. But we're making good decisions, getting rid of things we do not currently need and do not find worthy of the storage unit and we are paring down bit by bit.

I'm really liking these office spaces. I think I will try to draw useful bits and pieces from them.

I made it to one hundred. Today is the day. I think I'm supposed to be more excited than this. I read about people making it to their one hundredth post and it seems like I am missing out on the shooting stars and fireworks. Am I crazy? And there's always a giveaway. I did a little shopping for myself over at J Crew -- the ever fail-proof supplier of wardrobe basics. I've been wanting a new swim suit for this summer and have been shying away from two piece suits but when I saw that this lovely was on sale I knew it had to be the one! Great support, lining, blue and white AND dots were my top four reasons to purchase. I can't wait for it to arrive.

Last night, Casey and I were up in Northern Virginia celebrating one of his younger brother's high school graduation! Congrats, Ike! It was a fabulous celebration but I was not prepared for the no humidity, non-sub-tropic version of Virginia. I'm used to 95 and 100 percent humidity! I didn't even pack a long sleeve tee shirt. Summer evenings can often be cool, though. I'd love to have one of these to ward off the chill.

Sarah at note to self compiled her top five ingredients for her dream home and has asked that I do the same. After much thought and deliberation, these are what I believe would be the most important components to the structural and decorative aspects of my dream home.

gardens and landscaping

A well-landscaped home is not only inviting but I feel it reflects the inner personality of the residence as well. When taking walks through the neighborhood, I'm always finding myself wanting to go and peek about inside the homes with wonderfully landscaped grounds. I love plenty of large trees for enough shade, bursts of color and flowers sprinkled throughout dense greenery as well as warm lighting for the evening. I usually gauge my love for landscaping by noting how much I'd like to host an evening party in that persons lawn. When I can envision the sheer tent with stars twinkling through, I realize it's near perfection.

functional outdoor living space

Maybe it's because I'm southern or maybe I just love the great outdoors but the desire to live life outside is deeply ingrained in my being. Growing up within close proximity to the beach as well as the country, I spent many afternoons and evenings outside and as an adult I find that same pattern continues. If the weather's nice, I'll take the dinner party outside. If we've spent the entire day by the pool, why not eat dinner next to it? In my dream home, I would not be disappointed if that space were next to the ocean or a pool.

kitchen

I've made my stance on kitchens very clear (check that here): large enough to fit most of the extended family in, light & airy, useful and a space that can easily be updated. I love this kitchen by interior designer Victoria Hagan so much that I'm posting it again.

And this kitchen is her own. I like that the appliances could be easily updated or changed as well as the wood easily painted in order to add a touch of color.

A place to relax and get away from it all without being overstimulated.

I still believe this task would be so much more enjoyable in a place that you would want to spend time in regardless of the activity. In keeping with the light and airy theme of the kitchen, I'd have to go with a space that is charming and welcoming like this one.

I love the purpose behind this too much to leave it out. The space is relaxing but useful. I love the bookshelves, the wood work and the calm atmosphere that is exuded from this image. This space may be just as relaxing as that luxurious tub.

The Ananas handbag collection is simply impeccable. All handbags (I love that word, handbag, it sounds so refined) are handmade in New York City. Jennifer Baum Lagdameo, the founder of Ananas, takes her inspiration from the organic materials and textile techniques she found herself surrounded by while living in the Philippines. And one more thing! They plant a tree for each handbag purchased and if it is part of their eco-line, they'll plant ten trees. How's that for commitment? Check out the Ananas blog for new additions.

For the entire past year I've been thinking that I lost ALL of my paint brushes. ALL of them. And it would trouble my dear little soul every time I thought about painting. Painting is both a cathartic and relaxing process for me and to think I would have to shell out who knows how much for new brushes would just get my adrenaline pumping. In gearing up for our big move, I decided I would go through some of the boxes that had just been sitting around the apartment all year long so that we wouldn't have those extra boxes to carry. We took on a lot of stuff from my grandparents, old photographs and memorabilia that I could just not bring myself to get rid of when I went through their house after they both passed away. In the process, I found a peculiar box in the corner of our living room which I thought was a housing unit for Casey's National Geographics. I opened it to find the missing half of my architecture school supplies that I just chucked into it upon moving out of my studio desk. Apparently I was ready to get out of there. And forget it. There were the paint brushes! Oh! the joy! So, I might be spending some time painting this weekend. In all of that free time that's just waiting to be used up. I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

You know when you go to a design blog and amongst all the pretty stationary and invitation features you see people's addresses and last names blurred out. I'm going to call that a fakeout from now on. And boy, do I have a fakeout for you. My older sister (who is also my only sister, but just happens to be older) is getting married this October. We are all (my family and everyone that knows her) so very excited for her to have found her special someone and since the engagement won't be too long (a total of about four and half months) we are processing through ideas like madmen. I can barely keep up with the e.mails. Anyhow, I've prepared an invitation for a shower we're hoping to have for her this summer and this is my fakeout. Some of them seem over protective and unnecessary, like the date, but that's because we haven't decided on one yet.

A little glimpse in to my own artistic mind. Maybe I should take pictures once it is pretty and printed. The idea for this post looked better in my head.

We have moved! I want to shout it from the top of a mount, as I breath a million BIG sighs of relief. It was so nice to walk out of the old apartment leaving nothing behind and to start fresh in a new place. But am I am le tired. Hey friends, I'm still slowly making changes. I know I'm not the only one but life is pretty hectic these days. Thank you for being patient with me. I think I've mentioned that we're moving a week from Friday. And I need to start packing. Since we're not allowed to paint the walls in our new place (big tear), I'm thinking about taking the paper lanterns from our wedding and painting them. These are a few of my favorite finds. This weekend flew by but in all of the craziness there were quite of few special moments. My favorite was picking strawberries on our way home from the park. We all hopped out of the car, found out we had 10 minutes to pick as many berries as possible and set out to complete our task. We filled our two baskets to the brim and went home to have strawberry shortcake for dinner!

I really do appreciate the conveniences of the internet machine and the ability to connect with people we might have never met just fifteen or twenty years ago but I'm one of those people that needs to spend quality face to face time with friends and loved ones. I especially like finding a place that has comfortable chairs and gives you the impression that you're welcome to sit and chat as long as you'd like.

Gardens and Local Agriculture

I love getting down on my hands and knees, getting my hands dirty and then seeing the fruits (and vegetables) of my labor bloom in their own sweet time. I believe my love and appreciation for good food coming right out of my own backyard has been passed down to me from both sides of my families. Every summer as a kid I remember eating fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, watermelon and so much more that had been given to us by our grandparents. I also loved the stops we would make at road side farmer's stands on the way home from the beach for strawberries and peaches. I'm a huge supporter of the local movement and that's not just for food but for all artisans.

Blue and White

White and Blue. How could I not include this fabulous color combination? It's calming, it's sophisticated and no matter how it is paired I seem to love it and be instantly drawn to it. Even the coffee mug I'm drinking out of today is blue and white. Our bedroom is decorated in blues and whites and I can't wait to see how we will use it in our next home. I am such a nerd.

The Clash of Beauty and the Geek Culture

I like writing in HTML. I want to learn flash. I like working in PhotoShop and Illustrator. I used AutoCad and MicroStation and Rhino for three years for goodness sake! I like talking about right angles, straight lines and why certain materials should be used over others. But I like doing all of these in fashionable clothing and looking as gorgeous as I know how. Or if I'm at home, then in comfortable PJs. But of course, that has been completely romanticized in my head and in that dream I look like a movie star does when they roll out of bed.

Skateboarding

My first longboarding experience was in the Fall of 2007. My brothers took me down to the boardwalk and we skated all 60 blocks on first go. I loved it so much that Casey bought me a skateboard as his wedding present to me. I was shocked and stunned and totally love it. I know I am a complete misfit as far as skating culture goes, but it's such thrill and I feel so cool.

I've been searching the internet for all things horses, pink, purple and princess-like because I'm putting together a birthday poster for a little girl. In my search, I found this great tumblr account. It is a wonderful collection of so many gorgeous pictures and beautiful words. One of my favorites finds for the birthday poster :

I also found this nostalgic image of a carousel in France. It reminds of the times when my grandfather would take me out for a day of fun and we would go to ride the carousel by the water.

My favorite piece at the Lino Tagliapietra exhibit at Chrysler Museum yesterday was hands down Endeavor. The piece was influenced by the canoes of the peoples of the Amazon. I sat down in front of this for a good amount of time allowing myself to soak it all in. Every time my eyes moved I was picking up a detail I had not noticed before. I can't wait to go back and sit for a spell again.

Even though Mondays can feel heavy and dreary as we drag ourselves back to the workplace or back to the daily grind, I've begun to have a certain expectancy about the newness of discovery and exploration on Mondays. Instead of Monday morning being something I dread, I look forward to it with excitement and hope for a new adventure of discovery.

I've been enjoying posting about different artists on Mondays (for the past few weeks) and I would love to start a pattern of introducing you to a new artist (or refreshing your memory of one you might have already discovered) on a weekly basis.

I'm feeling so very inspired lately. And I admit, it's sort-of like an inspiration hurricane, a little bit overwhelming. I feel as though I'm all over the place which I'm really hoping isn't too confusing or hard to follow for you, my lovely friends. I'm in the process of setting up some sort of framework for posting.

I've been enjoying the work of Josh Goleman ever since I was first introduced to the Adam + Halli engagement shoot. I'm not sure exactly what it is that I love about his work but his photographs possess an honesty and forthrightness that are hard to come by. He doesn't attempt to transform his subjects in to people they are not for the sake of looking good on film. They are allowed to just be. Maybe that is why I love this photograph of an Amish Boy.

As I become older and more mature (please read that in a proper, British English voice) I've become more inclined to wear one piece swimsuits. I'm not really sure why I do this. I doubt it really has anything to do with maturity because sometimes I think that is in reverse mode.

Anyhow, I'm all for a classy one piece that leaves the wearer feeling confident and sexy without being overly dramatic.

Enter cuchè, a lovely line that fulfills all of my desires in a swimsuit.

I just might be investing in this, the nova.

I dream about kitchens more than I believe to be healthy for any sane individual.

Most cultures have a rich history involving the preparation of and then the gathering over food. I do not believe it is any surprise to anyone that a relatively large percentage of Americans generally do not understand or have a healthy appreciation for this approach towards foodism. There is definitely a subculture that has existed for quite some time and is continually developing a greater following for food appreciation. Think locally grown, organic farmers, restaurants serving local food and so much more. However, this growing trend of food appreciation rarely seems to be practiced in the home beyond major holidays and huge family gatherings. I believe this is due, in part, to the design of kitchens.

For example, the apartment that my husband and I live in has a terrible floor plan and we rarely invite guests over due to the fact that although the kitchen is nice it is at the very back of our apartment and it is not open to any other rooms nor is it large enough to have a small table or island.* We love entertaining and will pour hours of preparation and love into a meal but the feeling just isn't there. If we could knock down the wall between our dining room and kitchen, it might be completely different.

I know most of the kitchens in these photos are large but I'm loving that as I look at each one I feel as though I'm receiving an invitation to an informal dinner party. Or a fancy one. Or a phone call from my mother, grandmother or sister asking me over for a family dinner in the middle of the week.

I've always enjoyed the many stories and accompanying illustrations springing from the wealth of the creative mind of Theodor Geisel, lovingly known to most as Dr. Seuss. Whether it was as I was being read to as a small child or reading to the children I have babysat, there has always been a playfulness about his stories that leave the me feeling uplifted and lighthearted. How was your Easter weekend? The husband and I had a lovely, activity filled weekend. Saturday morning we sipped on our mochas while searching for our next place of residence then joined some friends for an afternoon birthday celebration. Early Saturday evening, we joined my family for Easter dinner. So many precious babes to play with and coddle yet so little time. Sunday was filled with relaxation and a wonderful afternoon bike ride involving a stop at the park for the children to play. Life is so very joyful!

Just this past week, I came across the lovely blog {frolic!}. Definitely sporting a little crush here. Chelsea Fuss is the master mind behind it all and I have to say, I'm loving what's happening.

Casey, my husband, has an insane obsession with my handwriting. I admit, I'm pretty fond of it myself but it doesn't seem I'm quite as passionate about it as he is. I do feel as though it is continually changing. If you were to go back and take a look in a journal from my pre teen years it would look completely different from one during my high school years. The same with college and now after college. I would like to think I've let it become much more individualized as time has passed. But who knows, maybe it looks just like yours. When I came across this font generator for the second time, I decided I would go ahead and test it out. The fact that it was totally free, you can install it to use on Microsoft Word, Adobe CS and more didn't hurt as well as the fact that they're going to begin charging a small fee once they hit 250 000 fonts. I embarked on my font making journey and surprised Casey with this e.mail in his inbox.

We have been bombarded with rain through this past winter into the spring and while it has been rather depressing for many, I've been enjoying it so so much! Apparently I need to move to Seattle or Portland. I don't know when or how I became so content, but when I think about the fact that there are so many areas of the world suffering through such severe drought (especially my beloved Australia) I can't help but be thankful for each drop that falls on the roof and continues on down to water the ground.

I don't know about you, but I'm the type of person that really values her sleep time. Whether I'm cozying down for the night or just curling up for a nap, I need to be comfortable, cuddled tightly in the blankets and completely left alone. For the most part, I'm a light sleeper so I tend to wake up fairly easily. However, I've noticed that I sleep better when I'm snoozing in a calm and peaceful setting.

I'm loving the mixture of charm and calm found in these bedrooms.

As I oohhed and ahhed over Nancy and Ethan's wedding featured at Once Wed my eyes and heart were opened to a love for simple and elegant style for weddings and parties on a very trim budget. While I was planning my own wedding one of my main priorities was to keep it very simple, and while I feel I succeeded at doing this, I'm afraid I wasn't very cost effective through the process. I believe that one of the reasons this couple's wedding turned out as beautifully as it did, is because the monetary limitation gave them the opportunity to be more creative.

I stumbled upon this photograph by Palachinka (which she explains is Serbian for crépe) and am suddenly wishing for an opportunity to serve this simple and elegant Crépe Cake.

I just took the Sproost Style Quiz suggested by Dallas Shaw. Oh! what fun and so much inspiration.

I am really not too surprised by my decorating style but am eager to send this quiz to my husband to see what his results are! My style is 46 percent Nantucket Style, 31 percent Traditional Country and 23 percent Classic. This explains my love for lighthouses, all things Cabbages and Roses and high backed chairs!

There are times when I would love to spend lots of money (that I don't have) on totally revamping a room by changing the style completely. I hope you all had a lovely Valentine's weekend. My husband and I spent our first married Valentine's Day with 50 crazy teenagers in Corolla, North Carolina. It was crazy, hectic and not the least bit romantic but we actually ended up having a very memorable and special day.

I don't dig much on Valentine's Day and I know that's pretty much what every cool person says. Honestly though, it doesn't change the fact that it's another one of those Holidays that is mass produced and very rarely thought out causing massive heartache (this holiday especially) for people that are let down. With so much news concerning the arrival of tons of little baby boys (my sister-in-law, my sister-in law's sister-in-law, my boss) I've been so anxious to hear about little girls. I really love everything feminine and romantic. Mind you, that does not include hot pink, Barbie Dolls or any Disney movie that involves a Prince rescuing a Princess. My sister and I joke about how our daughters (and sons) will play with wooden blocks, drawing utensils and paper, and everything having to do with the great outdoors.

This dress by Tegan over at Ink and Spindle refreshes all the ideals of simplicity and pure romanticism that I have tucked away in my heart somewhere.

I've been away for a bit. The New Year has been hectic and as every day passes I believe those who have told me that the older I get, the more quickly time passes.

My computer has been very very sick but I think I may be bringing it home very soon and I'd like to think I'll pick up my pace.

I hope you all had a very magical Holiday Season as well as a joyous New Year. It has really chilled down here in Virginia and I'm always looking for classy ways to stay warm and am so pleased with the Beret Hat from the Ruth Cross Collection.

I've already posted on calendars once before but I just came across this divine creation by daisy janie. I think I may start to use calendars as a form of decorating slash conversational piece in my home.

There is space at the top in case you need that extra added touch of organization and each month has a different pattern for its background where you can exercise little bursts of artistry and creativity. It reminds me of the Van Gogh paint-by-number experiment in Mona Lisa Smile.
